Corus plays a key role in the West Coast Main Line upgrade programme

06 Oct 2004

Corus has recently completed the installation of 18 modular platform extensions in less than nine weeks at six stations south of Rugby as part of the West Coast Mainline upgrade. Installation of two further platforms is pending the demolition of a footbridge at a seventh station. The modular platform kits were supplied by Corus to Birse, who installed the extensions in less than nine weeks and in doing so, have ensured the stations are ready for use by the longer trains coming into service with the winter timetable.

The stations concerned are Hemel Hempstead, Berkhamstead, Wolverton, Apsley, Kings Langley, Cheddington and Bushey.  The project involved deliveries of 502 tonnes of structural galvanised steelwork.

As well as the modular platform system, Corus provided design services and installation training for Birse operatives and Corus also carried out the fabrication at its Blackburn site.

Steve Syddall of Corus explains, “Given the time constraints the contractors were faced with, Corus’ modular kits were the only solution that would allow the team to meet the deadline of having the longer platforms installed in time for the winter timetable. As well as the time savings, the system is priced competitively and requires no plant for installation. It is also flexible enough to need few railway possessions and maximises green zone working.”
