Corus Rail Wins Top Industry Award
01 Oct 2003
Corus Rail, a subsidiary of the international metal company Corus, has won a prestigious industry award for creating a new type of railway platform.
The Rail Engineering Excellence award for 2002 was presented to the company at the HSBC Rail Business Awards at London's Grosvenor House Hotel last night (Thursday, February 20) for designing a self-contained steel framed platform.
Jon Bolton, managing director of the Corus Rail group of businesses said,
'The modular platform can be installed more quickly and more economically than conventional railway platform construction. It has already been installed at St Pancras - where engineering work on the Channel Tunnel Rail Link required a 60-metre extension to be installed in less than two days - and at Barry, South Wales where an 80-metre platform was constructed using the adjustable steel framework in conjunction with traditional surface finishing and fencing materials to blend in with historic surroundings. Since the submission for the HSBC awards, we have also received confirmation that we will be working with RailFirst and the Renewals Alliance to install the Corus system as platform extensions at Lichfield as part of the West Coast Route Modernisation programme.'
Peter Aldridge, head of HSBC Rail, sponsors of the awards said: 'Corus
Rail's modular platform is a deserved winner, both for its versatility and
innovation. Shorter installation times result in less disruption to the
train service, making this an economic winner for the industry.'
The HSBC Rail Business Awards are supported by Rail Professional magazine. Editor Andrew Goodman said: 'Set against the backdrop of a difficult 12 months for rail, the performance of Corus Rail Modular Systems and the other award winners is outstanding. It shows the heights that can be achieved - particularly when the industry is given the freedom to deliver'.
