Corus wins modular platform contract for West Coast Mainline
01 Aug 2004
Corus has signed (under seal) a supply only contract, valued at £1.7m, with contractor Birse for platform extensions using Corus modular system. The work, which is part of the West Coast Mainline Upgrade project, involves the provision of modular platform kits for extensions to 19 platforms at seven station locations South of Rugby.
Deliveries of the 500 tonnes of galvanised steel components are scheduled to take place from mid July to late August. West Coast Mainline has placed the contract in light of the requirement to have the stations available for use by longer trains by the beginning of the winter timetable in late September. As well as the platform system, Corus has provided design services, installation training for Birse operatives and Corus Metal Services at Blackburn has carried out the fabrication.
Client Birse and the West Coast Mainline Team decided to use the Corus system as it is competitvely priced and requires no plant for installation.
The system is also flexible enough to need few railway possessions and maximises green zone working. As well as this the speed of construction means that longer platforms can be constructued in time for the new winter timetable.
