Corus to showcase major investment programme at Infrarail 05

30 Aug 2005

Corus will be inviting key customers and contacts to INFRARAIL 05 to find out at first hand the details of a £130m investment programme for its Scunthorpe steelworks site.

Representatives from the company will be on hand at Stand 316 to talk to clients in detail about the Scunthorpe investment which will include a world class rail production facility.

Mike Poulter,Technical Director, Corus – Rail Sector, commented:

“The improvements at the Scunthorpe plant are an important element of our ongoing commitment to developing the rail sector in the UK. The additional facilities will strengthen Corus’ competitiveness in the rail market as well as providing a sound platform for future growth.

”In developing the proposals for the future of rail production at Corus, we have spent a long time listening to customer feedback. I hope many of our contacts will now take the opportunity to visit our stand at INFRARAIL 05 to find out why we believe the improvements we’re making will continue to meet their demands long into the future.”

State-of-the-art manufacturing equipment and streamlined operational procedures at Scunthorpe will offer customers a wider product range – including 120m rail for the first time in the UK – via a consistently efficient supply chain. Specific elements of the investment include:

  • Installing a new steel casting machine to replace an existing caster and intermediate rolling mill
  • Establishing a world class rail production facility at the existing section mill and an on-service centre to improve customer service and offer rail lengths up to 120 metres

The rail development programme is on schedule to be completed by November 2006 .
