Scottish freight route

Client: Network Rail Freight Commercial

The client was considering various additional freight routes to create additional train paths between London and Glasgow, increasing capacity on the East and West Coast Main Lines.

Corus was asked to make an initial assessment of their preferred route, comprising 578 route miles, within a six week period. The brief included identification of capacity problems and provision of cost estimates for clearance of high gauge freight.

The team then examined further route options, which required consideration of works needed to address the operational capacity and gauging issues for approximately 1000 route miles within a four week period.

Corus successfully completed the project to the demanding timescales set by the client. The studies enabled Network Rail to evaluate the merits of a large number of routing options.

Corus work involved feasibility stages of:

  • Traditional gauging analysis
  • Junction remodelling, including grade separated junctions and new chord lines
  • Additional running line parallel to the existing lines
  • Reopening of closed lines
  • An innovative, statistical method of gauging assessment
  • Cost estimations
