North transpennine route improvements

Client: Network Rail London North Eastern Zone

Corus has worked closely with Network Rail to produce a strategic feasibility report covering the engineering works required to achieve the North Transpennine Upgrade project.

The aim of the project is to achieve a 45 minute journey time between Leeds and Manchester Piccadilly, with a service running every 15 minutes.

Services Provided
Corus has provided a multi-discipilned feasibility study involving:

  • Permanent way: outline design of remodelling schemes, evaluation of linespeed improvements and gauging for larger freight traffic.
  • Structures/Civils: evaluation of impact on structures, stations etc. of both the remodelled layouts and linespeed increases.
  • Electrical & Mechanical: consideration of switch heating for the proposed layouts and undertaking service searches.
  • Signalling: redesigning of the whole signalling systems both for increased linespeeds and remodelling layouts, including transfer of signalling control centres.

Special Features
All functions have been involved from the first stage of remit development through to the consideration of staging, thus delivering a single product that covers all the major engineering aspects of such a large and complex project.
