Newark dyke bridge

Newark Dyke Bridge, built in 1889, is located at Newark in Nottinghamshire, on Network Rail's East Coast Main Line. The bridge carries the line over a navigable waterway, the Newark Navigation branch of the River Trent, on a skewed alignment.

Corus was Consulting Engineer to Kvaerner Construction for reconstruction of the large span steel truss bridge, which was life expired, and was commissioned to design the track, signalling and substructure.

During the Bank Holiday at the end of August 2000, a new steel bowstring girder bridge with a design life of 120 years was slid into place. Corus' design skills ensured that work could be carried out with minimum disruption to the operational railway.

The new track alignments were designed for trains running at 125mph immediately following reconstruction, and for 140mph in the longer term plan to reduce journey times on the whole of the East Coast route.
