The Project:

The Kildare Route Project (KRP) is a EUR 340 million project identified in the Irish Governments' National Development Plan. The project involves upgrading 50 km of rail infrastructure between Heuston Station in Dublin and Kildare Station, in order to increase capacity along the route and allow for the operation of a suburban train service.

Services Provided:

Corus led the project through an optioneering and value management phase. Work undertaken during this phase included: the identification of project objectives, stakeholder consultation, value management exercises and the preparation of financial submissions.

Work undertaken by Corus during the design phase included:

• Provision of Project Management Support - Tasks undertaken by this team included: engineering design management, the development of a cost estimate, management of consultation, the maintenance of a risk register and the development of a Procurement Strategy.
• Engineering Design –Design work fully utilising Corus' multi-disciplinary capabilities, including the:
  • Design of route alignment and S&C layouts
  • Design of structures & geotechnical retaining solutions
  • Design of route-wide drainage, security, lineside access and maintenance facilities
  • Design development of a new signalling system
  • Design of the upgrade of five existing stations and the three new stations
  • Development of an outline Construction Programme.
• Transport Planning and Operational Modelling – An Operations team was established to determine the level of operational performance to be achieved by the upgrade, and to ensure the level of service required could be delivered.
• Environmental Impact Assessment – To comply with Irish Legislation, an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was compiled that identified the various aspects of the scheme that would impact on the environment.
• Preparation of a Railway Order – A Railway Order provides IE with the rights to build and operate a new railway and the powers to compulsorily acquire land. The KRP's Railway Order was prepared by Corus' Consents Team, in conjunction with IE.
